About the School

Founded in 1927, this selective school of approximately 880 pupils is set in nine acres of grounds against the background of Beddington Park . The School is a foundation school in the London Borough of Sutton, situated on the main road between Sutton and Croydon. Wallington County is a grammar school. 120 pupils are selected from among the top 25% of the ability range by 11+ examination with a few more pupils admitted at 13+.

The Ofsted inspection of January 2005 reported a “very good school with some excellent features”. These features include very high examination results, excellent relationships, first rate support for pupils, and the Headmaster's very clear vision and purpose for his school.  Teaching and pupils' achievement are very good.  Leadership and Management by all key staff are very good.”

Main School Building and Sports Fields

The School retains a traditional character which promotes academic achievement, personal qualities, sporting prowess and cultural pursuits. Pupils are involved in the life of the School and develop a strong sense of loyalty and commitment. Throughout there are high expectations of all those who work and study here; the pursuit of excellence pervades all that we do.

The School has a progressive outlook, reflected in current issues concerning the curriculum. The “Condensed Curriculum” at Key Stage 3 is being implemented fully; the National Curriculum for all subjects at Key Stage 3 will be completed in two years. Options choices are made at the end of Year 8, and GCSE courses begin in Year 9. Consequently three years will be devoted to Key Stage 4 allowing scope for an enhanced programme of work and the consolidation of GCSE material. This approach reduces the pressure to complete the syllabus, releasing more time and affording greater scope for additional activities whilst improving still further GCSE results. The School's value-added results at Key Stage 3 have been ranked 7 th nationally and the 11 th best boys' school in recent years, so covering the work in two years is perfectly realistic. Innovations are usually effective because the pupils are receptive to new ideas. At GCSE, pupils are entered for 10, 11 or 12 subjects depending on whether they study Statistics in addition to Mathematics and on whether they are entered for the three separate sciences.

Science Block and Main School

There are over 250 students in the Sixth Form, including about 50 girls who join the school from other institutions. The Sixth Form curriculum offers a wide range of subjects. Students mainly take 5 A/S Level courses and 4 Advanced Level subjects including General Studies. A number of students each year go on to Oxford and Cambridge , and almost all members of the Sixth Form gain a place at university. Prefects play an important part in the life of the School and students are given opportunities to lead and show initiative, and to offer service to the School and wider community.

Industry links are well established. All members of Year 11 and a number of the Lower Sixth Form undertake sessions of work experience and work closely with their tutors on vocational matters. The contribution of experienced senior staff to advising is extensive and the careers service gives good support. The School attaches great importance to guidance on vocational, personal, social and health matters.

Every effort is made to involve parents in the life of the School and the PTFA organises frequent events. Loyalty to the School is nurtured through the old boys, the Old Walcountians Association, which has its clubhouse and grounds at Clock House, Woodmansterne.

Rose Walk and Sixth Form Block

The School has an orchestra, choir and wind band. Debating and drama flourish. The quality of Art work is exceptional. There are regular concerts and theatrical events. The School's main competitive sports are rugby, cricket, hockey, cross-country running and athletics; there are frequent practices after school and there is an extensive Saturday fixtures list. The School has good outdoor facilities on site and also makes extensive use of the Old Walcountians' grounds at Woodmansterne, some 3 miles away, especially for fixtures and for all hockey activities. The School hopes to build a sports hall in the next three years, but presently uses the nearby Borough facilities for basketball, tennis, swimming, badminton and squash. There is a range of clubs, which includes chess, computing and Christian Union. Pupils are expected to take part in extra-curricular activities. It is regarded as an honour for pupils to represent their school and a range of awards are made in recognition of this. The House system plays an important part in extending pupils' involvement and provides competition in the major school sports and other activities.

The School seeks to provide an excellent academic education, foster a sense of community, promote personal qualities of honesty, tolerance and respect for others, and develop in pupils a sense of moral awareness and an appreciation of the virtues of loyalty, duty and social responsibility.
