ICT DEPARTMENT

Subject Leader: Mr. Gus Ege, BSc

The ICT department consists of three well-qualified teachers.  ICT is a key subject in the main school curriculum and ICT is popular in the Sixth Form.  The department is located on the top floor of the main building overlooking Beddington Park, and consists of two well-equipped rooms.  Each room has a digital projector as a teaching aid and an Interactive Whiteboard.  The provision in ICT was judged as “good” for both the Main School and the Sixth Form during the January 2005 OfSTED Inspection.

Curriculum

The school is part of a DfES Project for a condensed Key Stage 3 curriculum and the ICT Department is a leading department in the second London phase of the Project.  At Wallington the condensed Key Stage 3 now involves all subjects and pupils complete the National Curriculum programme of study for years 7, 8, and 9 in years 7 and 8.  In year 9 the students start their three year highly enriched GCSE programme.

ICT courses at Wallington are designed to be interesting, stimulating and to meet the needs of pupils not only in their ICT and computing courses but also in other areas of the curriculum.  All pupils in Years 7 and 8 are taught in forms and cover the three year NC curriculum programme of study.  From September 2006 all pupils in years 9 and 10 have been prepared for AQA’s short course GCSE and some students have studied for the AQA double award Applied ICT Course.

A major component of the teaching at Wallington occurs in the Sixth Form where good numbers of students follow AS and Advanced Level ICT GCE courses.  The OCR Specification is taught.  Coursework is a major element of the examination at GCSE, AS and Advanced Levels.  In September 2006 AS level ICT was being introduced into the Sixth Form curriculum.

Enrichment Activities for ICT

Computer Club runs during the lunch break and after school and to which all members of the department contribute.  Clearly ICT plays an important role in the majority of departments and  ICT teaching staff forge close links with colleagues from other disciplines to improve the overall provision for pupils.
