The acquisition of good study skills and private study is encouraged through homework. Parents are expected to support the School in ensuring that homework is completed each day to the highest standard. The School gives every encouragement for pupils to learn and gain qualifications in other languages spoken in the home.
The development of spiritual and moral values is of central concern to the School. Religious Studies is taught in line with the syllabus of the local Standing Advisory Committee for RE (SACRE), of which the Headmaster is a member. The relevance of spiritual concepts in the modern world is explored and pupils are encouraged to think for themselves.
Assemblies are traditional in character and provide a sense of corporate spirit. A typical assembly will take the form of a reading from the scripture by a prefect, an address from the Headmaster relating the text to the context of contemporary events. This is accompanied with some celebration of recent achievements of pupils. A number of guest speakers, including representatives of major faiths, provide variety.
Education in sexual matters is provided for all pupils through Science courses. This takes the form of basic factual accounts of human reproduction and related sexual concerns. Factual detail is augmented by lessons in personal, social and health education (PSHE) which place these matters in the context of family life and values. All pupils receive education and advice relating to the dangers of using drugs. The wide programme of PSHE also deals with matters relating to Citizenship. Work experience sessions are arranged for all students in Year 11 and the Sixth Form where appropriate.
"Pupils achieve much higher results than expected from their starting points; in other words, the value added by the school is well above average.” OfSTED Report |
