Matthew Blow wins prize at the London Student Awards for Creative Writing

Students from across London are celebrating their success after scooping the top prizes at this year’s prestigious London Student Awards.

The winners were congratulated by Minister for Schools and Learners Jim Knight at a glittering ceremony held at the Natural History Museum.

The London Student Awards, run in association with BBC London, aim to celebrate and reward the capital’s next generation of writers, scientists, artists and musicians.

It was open to all students across the capital in Years 9 and 10 and covered six categories – Art & Design, Music, Drama, Creative Writing, ICT and Science.

Winners were rewarded with unique money-can’t-buy prizes such as a day in the studio with a top record label or the opportunity to shadow a leading author.

Congratulations to all our winners, runners up and borough winners, and a big well done to everyone who entered. The Judges said the standard of entries this year was impressively high and everyone who took part can feel proud of their efforts.

Keep an eye out for next year’s competition!

Matthew Blow's creative writing short story about the life of Londoners saw him win the Sutton qualifier and go forward from thousands of entries to compete against just one other girl, aged 16, from The Latymer School.  (Matthew is in Year 8 and was entered a year early)

Matthew came runner up in this category, and the judge said that the decision was extremely difficult and that the panel were split. Matthew received a special prize from Random House publishing of a set of first editions from the childrens author Joseph Delaney.

It was an amazing event with Jim Davis (Minister for Education: Schools), BBC presenter Asad Ahmed and members of the cast of Hollyoaks presenting the awards. The entire event was shown on BBC London news.

Matthew, his Mum and Dad had a fantastic evening.

The Headmaster congratulates Matthew on his success
