Carew House Report 2006-2007

by Narada McKoy

For Carew, 2006-7 was a year of highs and lows but mainly a year of mediocrity, with us sliding from third to fourth in the Cock House cup. However it’s not all doom and gloom, this year we experienced some record breaking individual achievements from our Carew sportsmen. To start the year our new intake had the daunting task of the road relay and the assault course and they preformed admirably coming 3rd and 4th respectively. These performances landed us in 3rd place in the Manor trophy and the Year 7’s should be highly praised since this was their first contribution to the House. Next came the dramatic speaking, in which we came first, with Jamie Henry and Stephen Bailey giving particularly inspiring performances.

In the cross country our successful Year 9 and 10’s performed well again coming first, with Ross Norton winning overall. The seniors showed their commitment by actually managing to put together a team, where other Houses couldn’t, and although we came 3rd we managed a Bayles and Hook one two. Another excellent individual performance. On the subject of individual performances, Ross Norton won the Carew Shield for Endeavour for his outstanding contribution to the House in all areas; captaining the record breaking junior rugby squad and breaking the school javelin record.

The next term commenced with rugby, which was a mixed bag for our determined teams. There were particularly disappointing results for our year 7’s and 8’s in the Moriarty Cup, with our team coming last in a very competitive field. However, in the Junior league there was a record breaking performance from our team; with our year 9’s and 10’s winning all their games without conceding a point (this must be a school record), with fine performances from Jacob Dyer Jones and Tom Hammond. This is an achievement worthy of much praise. Carew also performed admirably in the fiercely competed Bawden Shield in which we came third (in possibly the worst conditions known to man). The fact a squad with subs turned up on a cold, wet, muddy day is commendable in itself.

For the first time in the school’s history we also competed with the round ball, and for our junior teams it was a less than pleasant experience, with a string of tough games. However with the slow introduction of football into our games curriculum we can hope to improve on these performances. Football seemed to finally give the seniors a new lease of life, with many House members’ injuries (but very prominent near to the rugby and cross country) suddenly disappearing. A good squad came second to Bridges and this competition gave many people who don’t usually get a chance to represent the House an opportunity to shine, with Kabir Qazi giving a sterling performance. As always in Carew, what we lack in brawn we more than make up for in brain, proved in our winning of the Science quiz for the second year in a row.

Towards the end of the year we suffered our usual summer fatigue with mediocre performances across the board in the cricket and athletics competitions. This is an issue we have to address in the future. Overall, this was a year upon which we can all build and improve, with an impressive new intake coming through, and with our ever growing experience, commitment and teamwork, the future looks bright for Carew. Finally, many thanks to the Housemasters and their input into running the House and well done to all members of Carew, who, as usual competed in good spirit.
