3rd April 2008

Dear Parents,

I write just prior to setting off with pupils on a visit to the Red Sea.  This is something of a pilgrimage for me, but principally a privilege to spend time with pupils exploring a different world.

The OfSTED inspection report will be published as soon as we receive it, early next term.  The inspectors confirmed fully our self-evaluation, and there were no surprises.  As you well know, most things are at least good, with outstanding achievement in the Sixth Form.  I was encouraged by reports of the support of parents; pupils’ conduct during the inspection was exemplary.

There are two colleagues leaving this term.   Mr. Parkes was appointed as Director of Music on a temporary basis for the Spring Term.  A pianist, Mr. Parkes studied music at the Colchester Institute gaining a BA in Music.  He completed a PGCE at Sussex University prior to teaching in Cambridgeshire.  He moved to West Sussex as Head of Music at Portslade Community College and then at Westergate Community College.  This term the Easter Concert was delightful, and his accompanying of pupils, accomplished.  In his short time, Mr. Parkes’ experience was much to the benefit of pupils.

Mr. Scales is leaving the School at the end of the term after twenty nine years of service to the English department, and a teaching career spanning thirty four years.  A member of Worcester College, Oxford, Mr. Scales is a scholar with an original mind.  Perceptive and widely read, he engaged his pupils intellectually.  Throughout his time at the school, Mr. Scales has given much.  He was a highly successful Senior Housemaster of Mandeville House.  He has spent many hours over the years organising and coaching pupils for cross country events.  An accomplished singer, Mr. Scales sung in the school choir, and his humorous individual contributions in Christmas Concerts are unforgettable.  Mr. Scales has been involved in debating, public speaking competitions and directing school plays.  He has accompanied many school trips and organised visits to the theatre.  Many will cherish recollections of being taught by him, and generations of students will remain grateful for his challenging their thinking and to involve them in the wider life of the School.  He will be greatly missed.

Next term is crucial for many pupils, and I trust that you will encourage your son or daughter both to relax and also to take advantage of the opportunity for revision.

With best wishes,

Headmaster.
