In Open Text examinations, the copies you take into the examination room must be completely clean. Please note that you MUST have a copy of "A Passage to India" for studying when you return from study leave this term.

This Chapter is titled Deconstructing Hard Times, by Steven Connor. As well as clearly explaining what is meant by Deconstruction, Connor explains how the technique can lead to a fuller understanding of the novel.

This is Chapter 7 of "Modern Critical Interpretations: Charles Dickens's 'Hard Times'" edited by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University. This Chapter is titled Polphony and Problematic, by Roger Fowler. Not the easiet chapter to get to grips with, but worth the effort. Fowler argues that Hard Times is a polyphonic novel - that is, characters achieve voices which challenge the validity of the authorial position.
