I wish you all the very best of fortune in the New Year. We all want the School to excel in it, and I trust that you will continue to encourage your son or daughter to work hard and to aim high.
We welcome back Mr. Russell and Miss Davies, both former Heads of Economics, to teach until Ms. Claire Troke takes up her post in February as Subject Leader for Economics and Business Studies. Ms Troke studied at the London School of Economics, working then for Security Pacific Eurofinance and Bank of America before taking up a post as Senior Accountant in Marseille, France. She developed her career as a Management Accountant at Internet Services Ltd. and Finance Manager at InterX PLC, and worked in Milan and Madrid for A.I.G. Europe, reporting directly to their US headquarters. Ms.Troke is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. In 2003, she made a career choice and trained as a teacher at Kingston University. Since taking her PGCE, Ms.Troke has taught at Archbishop Tenison’s CE High School in Croydon, where she has been actively involved with school business trips. Well travelled, Ms.Troke is a hiker and a keen cyclist, having completed the London-Birmingham bike ride and other long-distance rides.
The Sports Hall has hit the inevitable problems of planning. We want to build something which is of lasting architectural worth, which embraces issues of conservation and renewable energy, and which impacts as little as possible on Beddington Park and our neighbours. Such considerations cost money. We are pushing ahead, and trust that September sees our dreams near reality. The total cost is still around £1,367,000, and our target for fund-raising £100,000. Pupils are working hard to raise funds; the International Evening Committee and PTFA have made an impact; and many parents have made donations. The total raised thus far, is £20,000 plus the £4,000 net profits of the International Evening. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.
The School Calendars will be distributed shortly; additional copies are available for may be collected from the school office. Please note that parent consultation evenings start at 6pm. That for Year 11 is on Thursday, 1st February; Year 9 on Wednesday, 7th February; Year 8 on Thursday, 1st March; Year 10 on Wednesday, 14th March; the Sixth Form on Tuesday, 20th March. Year 8 also have a GCSE Options meeting on Tuesday, 13th February; the Lower Sixth have a UCAS meeting on Tuesday, 27th February and there is an Oxbridge meeting on Thursday, 22nd March.
The School Production of Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion” is on Thursday, 8th and Friday, 9th February. The Sixth Form production of Pinter’s “The Birthday Party” won critical acclaim last term, and Mrs. Devereux and the talented cast are working tremendously hard on this ambitious project. A full house would be appreciated.
Headmaster.
