Food Technology at Wallington County Grammar School
Food Technology Vision:
To create an environment of continuous improvement, built on
active and constructive feedback where pupils will feel empowered to challenge
and develop themselves. To use practical application of theory so pupils leave
the school with a real and tangible skill that will help and support them
throughout their lives. Food technology is a life skill enabler and the skills
pupils will learn at WCGS will enrich their life experience. The subject will
forge bonds and cross curricular links that will embed the philosophies of deep
learning and deep experience. Food Technology at WCGS will be a subject in
which the wider school community is involved bringing together pupils, parents
and staff in an atmosphere of inclusivity and collaborative working.
At Key Stage 3 pupils learn about the principles of healthy
eating, nutrition and diet and topics such as Fairtrade, Organic Farming,
Sustainability and Food Miles. Pupils
are taught basic cooking techniques and methods and take part in a practical
lesson every fortnight.
At Key Stage 4, pupils can undertake a Single or Double
Award in Hospitality & Catering.
The GCSE option will provide pupils with an opportunity to
develop a wide range of practical skills in the planning, preparation and
serving of food.
Pupils will study all aspects of the hospitality and
catering industry and pupils will be called upon to use the practical examples
and skills they have learned to a significant degree.
Areas of study will include:
Food Preparation, Presentation and Service Food Production
e.g. cooking a wide variety of dishes
Nutrition and diet
Health and safety
Types of services within the industry.
